Super Golf Swing Secrets

To play golf you need good hand-eye coordination, balance, and knowledge of golf swing biomechanics, athletic ability and a good amount of creativity. The average golfer's gross score is about 107 shots. And no matter what area of your game needs improving, whether it's balance and alignment or power and speed, there's a simple solution.

You want to play your game of golf with confidence. Know that you're improving your swing each time that you play. It's good to approach the game with a positive attitude and repeat predetermined affirmations like, 'I play great golf all the time.' Now if you've hit with your golf driver perfectly just one time, then you can do it every time you play. The subconscious mind knows the correct number and sequence of muscle contractions and nerve impulses that are needed, which is called muscle memory and is used in all sports. Be aware that the mental aspect of the game contributes to the difficulty of your golf swing.

When you swing your club, you should use the muscles in your legs and trunk. And sidespin will occur when the clubface is not properly aligned perpendicularly to the plane of the swing. If you have problems with your left knee buckling when you swing, try imagining holding a soccer ball between your knees.

Make sure to try to use the proper golf swing technique, never a shortcut. Ask your golf pro to take a minute to evaluate your posture and biomechanics while you're swinging. And use the basic 'hitchhiker' position when you're working on your backswing.

As the body matures, the ability to rotate the upper torso can be affected and the hand action can also slow down thus requiring a slightly stronger grip than one would use if they were younger. After you've hit the ball, you should follow through with a continued rotation to the left. And make sure to swing slowly and steadily using good rhythm and good biomechanics.

At the end of your swing, the weight should be shifted almost entirely to the left foot, the body fully turned to the left and the hands above the left shoulder with the club hanging down over the back. Putting can become a recurring nightmare and a condition called the 'yips' has affected not only amateurs but many golf professionals so you should get expert advice and consider a golf swing trainer if this happens to you.

By using just a few simple tips, techniques and stretches, you can increase the distance of your drives by up to 20 yards - almost overnight. One good exercise is to hold a medicine ball in front of you and turn back and forth, left and right as far as you can go. It must be rotational if you want to improve on your driving distance. And because the proper golf swing is mostly rotational it really makes sense to concentrate on your turning ability as it relates to both range of motion and speed. You never want to underestimate the sheer value of fitness when it comes to your golf swing and your overall golf game.

Regarding golf swing aids and golf swing trainers - golf magazines often cover reviews by golfers, making it much easier to choose the right one for you. Before buying any aid or trainer for your swing however, check with an expert to get an idea of what problem you need to work on first, for example, the backlift of your golf swing or the momentum of the downward thrust or stance. Keep in mind that with some of the golf swing trainers, you may still need help from a pro.

And if you're looking for an aid to improve your stance they're fairly easy to find. If you're a golfing novice just starting out, it's easy to become overwhelmed with all there is to learn.

There are a wide range of golf swing aids and analyzers on the market today to help the both the beginner and advanced golfer improve swing techniques. Most of all you don't want to waste your money on an aid or trainer you don't need or will never use so make sure to look for reviews and ratings online or offline for any golf swing trainer that you're considering.

It's most important to try to relax and try to really enjoy your game. Consider a golf vacation package as a good way to get in more practice. And if you can't take your golf clubs and golf accessories with you when you go, you should be able to easily rent golf clubs, golf accessories, golf bags, golf carts or golf cart covers at any golf resort.

So when you play a round of golf, concentrate on your putting, improving your golf swing or something specific for that day; have a firm plan in mind. It makes sense to invest in a few of the newest golf videos or DVDs, golf books, golf software and golf ebooks; older golf books may be outdated - there are hundreds of free and simple golf tips to seek out in consumer and sports magazines also, in books, ebooks, software and DVDs both, online and offline.

How To Find Golf Instruction Online Free

Golf lessons are expensive. For most of us, it's just not possible to go out on the green with a one-on-one trainer, as much as we'd like to.

But, here's an idea. Imagine if you could have a one-on-one lesson with a professional golfer or highly renowned trainer for free, in the privacy of your own home? Impossible, right?

Not exactly! You're always hearing about how the Internet is revolutionizing the way we do everything, and now's your chance to reap its benefits. You can get online golf instruction free, and with streaming videos and detailed photos, you can make your game better.

Where To Find The Instruction You Need Online

There are tons of sites offering free golf instruction. Look in any major search engine and you'll find thousands. But, when you click on those, you might just end up finding ads for something you don't want or need.

Look For The Big-Names

The best advice for finding good golf tips is to look for names you know. You've never heard of Bill Smith from Springfield, Arizona, so why listen to what he has to say? On the other hand, if Tiger Woods is on your screen demonstrating his address position, you'll probably drop everything and listen, right? For more info see http://www.getgoodatgolf.com/swing/

If you want good advice, look for somebody you trust. This doesn't have to be golf pros; you can also look online for golf magazines' websites. These often have a "tips" section where you can find free instruction.

Know What You Need To Learn

Online golf instruction works really well with a regular training course. After your golf lesson, or after a game, run home and plop down in front of that computer. Reflect on your game and think about what needs improvement.

When you use a search engine like Google or Yahoo, the more specific the better. If you are having trouble, for example, with the chicken wing, do a search for "chicken wing" in the search engine. will bring up so mny sites, you won't know where to look.

Watch Movies

Nothing beats videos for online golf instruction. Internet media technology has gotten so widely-available and effective that everybody can watch videos on the internet. All you need is a good media player and you can download those from their websites.

With an online golf video, it's just like being there on the green with your instructor. Some websites offer free videos for their members. Usually, you can check out a sample video or two before you join. On many of these sites, membership is free.

Downloadable Software

There is also a wide variety of golf software available. Some of it is expensive, but some sites also offer free downloadable software that you can use while you're training.

We'd all like to go to golf school and work one-on-one with nationally recognized pro-trainers, but the reality is that everybody has to work. And, very few of us can afford that kind of luxury. Free online golf instruction offers every golfer a way to go to golf school in the privacy of their own home.

Golf Management Software - 5 Steps to Finding the Right Partner

Few decisions are as potentially confusing - or critical to a course's business - as selecting the right golf software provider for your operation. Savvy operators recognize that golf course management software with integrated marketing technologies, including online tee time and customer relationship management tools, are essential weapons in their battle for market supremacy. But how does an operator know which golf software provider will make the best partner? What are a vendor's strengths - and limitations - in helping operators achieve their business goals? And what kind of return on investment should operators expect from technology?

Identifying and engaging an effective golf management software provider starts with a few basic steps:

1. DEFINE YOUR GOALS. Before you can find the best golf software provider for your business, you need to know what you want a golf software partner to help you achieve. Manage course operations? Generate more rounds during the off-season? Attract more customers? Retain existing customers? Be specific about your objectives and develop a series of questions that relate to your specific needs. Ask every vendor these same questions. That way, you can ensure you're comparing each golf management software package objectively to help make the best decision.

2. KNOW YOUR CUSTOMERS. A golf software provider will never understand your market or your customers as well as you do. Help the company design the best software solutions by providing as much insight as you can. Operators should also select a golf software vendor who understands service. What stands out to a golfer is the guest experience and service your staff provides. Finding a provider who knows how to implement software that enhances service and attracts customers is essential.

3. ASK FOR RECOMMENDATIONS. Ask your peers which providers are reputable and have the best track records based on their own experience. People will tell you what they honestly think about their golf management software, which can be very helpful to know upfront. Customer recommendations can help narrow down the best provider options to assist in making an informed decision.

4. FOCUS ON SERVICE. Success in attracting and retaining customers is largely a function of the experience you deliver. Identify software providers who know how to use technology to enhance service. Look at which operator is doing it right and don't forget to question the vendor about the extent and quality of its customer support. Find a provider who contains high quality customer service to help streamline operations and assist if any issues to arise.

5. MAKE SURE IT'S EASY. Will your staff be able to learn to use the management software? Does the vendor offer onsite training to help your staff quickly adapt to the software? Ensure the new system is worth the time - and money - to implement. The best way to do that is with a strong case for return on investment. Be sure to find a software solution that is user friendly and can easily be taught and maintained by staff.

Finding The Right Golf Software

There are many ways to improve your gold swing when you are a beginner golfer. If you do not have the time to take lessons, purchasing software that records and gives you feedback can help you see mistakes you are making and offers solutions on how to correct them before they become habits that are difficult to break. You can find this software in pro shops, sporting goods stores, and online.

Before purchasing any type of software, find out if you need other equipment including a camera or additional computer software to run the program. Many times you will need a camera because you need a picture of your swing so it can be analyzed. After taking a few pictures of your swing, you will upload them to your computer and the software will do the rest. After analyzing your swing, you will receive feedback, advice, and visual images to help improve your swing. Golf analysis is important especially if you want to become better at the game of golf in a shorter amount of time.

In addition to golf software, there are many books, tapes, and educational CD's you can purchase that also offer advice and critique on your golf swing. One of the best ways to improve your game is by watching other golfers. Many pros have spent hours watching old games on television to find out how to stand, swing, and other tips pertaining to golf clubs, weather conditions, and specific golf courses. Even though you don't have to spend hours watching old matches, you should watch golf pros at their best by catching highlights or watching specific moves over and over until you are able to mimic it on the course.

Another way to improve your golf game is by purchasing the right equipment and learning how to use it properly. Taking lessons or reading books about golf can help you distinguish between one golf club and another. Because each serves a different purpose, it is important to know which ones to use during the game.

Over time, your golf game will improve. Through practice, observation, and by listening to those who have been playing the game for a long time, you will be able to play a better round of golf in a few months. Golf analysis software along with lessons can help you see your strengths and weaknesses more clearly. Only then will you be able to improve your golf game and impress your friends and others.

Golf Course Irrigation Systems

A golf course might be a dream place, but unless it is well irrigated with a sophisticated irrigation system, it will not only lead to water wastage but will do harm to the quality of the ground. Therefore a wise decision must be taken when deciding which system to adopt. The golf course irrigation system usually consists of sprinklers, field controllers, central control systems and valves. These are the components of an automatic sprinkler system. Each has a function of its own and each plays a vital role in proper irrigation. It is always advisable to use irrigation systems that manage water efficiently.

The central control system offers automatic monitoring thus it saves water and benefits the environment. An automatic controller will have multiple start times, multiple independent programs and automatic shut on / off. This is a great option, because you have the flexibility to irrigate only when necessary. You can also use nozzles that allow water to be spread evenly. By doing this, brown spots can be avoided and the course will look a lot better. Precipitation nozzles have been said to reduce water wastage by 30%.

Sprinklers come in retrofit conversion units, modular controls and hand held units. Companies today are manufacturing sprinklers keeping customer requirements in mind. All sites are different thus they need sprinklers, which will cater to the irrigation requirements of the site. There are also sprinklers that offer precision coverage for the ground. This is especially beneficial to irrigate tee boxes and other areas that will be difficult to reach. A small-bodied sprinkler is apt for small spaces. With proven toughness and durability sprinklers come with low maintenance requirements.

The central control system is the central processing unit. It is the intelligence behind the irrigation system. You can get graphic based software to make your job easy. This system gives direction to the valves. It tells the valves when to irrigate and when to stop. The sprinkler just directs the flow of water once it receives instruction. A watering station is a set of sprinklers, which is controlled by a single valve. The type of water station depends on the quality of the lawn and the type of plants used. The valves are operated in a certain order and not all at once. Therefore, only when one station has completed work, the next one will start. A watering program controls the watering station.

A watering program is developed to determine the timetable for the watering and how much of water to use. Different plants need different watering timetables. Some plants do not need to be watered every day but some others require daily watering. Thus the system should be pre-programmed to take care of different situations.

Logo Golf Umbrellas Are Great for Business

A perfectly coordinated golf tournament could be very successful if a golf umbrella is there to protect the players on a sunny day at the green. There are lots of manufacturing companies that make logo golf umbrellas. Many players like to have imprinted umbrellas. It is also good to give them as a gift as well. They can be adorned with the name of the sponsored company or its logo.

They could be used on a number of places like a golf course, beach, baseball, football and any sporting event. The high usage of logo golf umbrellas has made it a good promotional branding tool for your business. For example, being an owner of company, you awarded your staff and clients with your imprinted items. All of them would have a common point of having your company name and logo on every single instance.

By taking it one-step further, when your clients take it with them on their holiday like on a beach, your logo golf umbrellas would gain people's attention and they probably notice it or at least read it once. No matter what is the motivating factor of their looks, the main thing is your logo is in their sight. However, do not take them for granted, as they could certainly inquire about your company and take every necessary detail.

Another way of promoting your brand name is by sponsoring any television program where the participants take your logo golf umbrellas for having some shade or protecting them from the rain. When the camera focuses on the audience, which is presenting a live sporting event, your logo, would be in the line of sight of millions of viewers.

Many companies are providing logo golf umbrellas. Few of the famous companies are Apex, Ben Hogan, Benross, Bushnell, Nike, and Mizuno etc. Other than these branded companies, many other companies are providing a facility of printing of customized signs or sentences on golf umbrellas like some quote or phrase. You can easily get golf umbrellas in any shop and can have your desired sentence printed on it. Promoting your brand name is quite inexpensive as compared to other campaigns. The reason is the cost of television advertising is extremely high. In many countries, a well-known radio station encouraged the listeners to be imaginative with getting station logos on television on various important events. In this way people are not only encouraged but also it created a media buzz too.

6 Keys to Golf Fitness Prowess

As you have probably heard and read many times since, serious golfers everywhere are now understanding the importance of taking the time to invest in their body to conditioning their ultimate swing machine and improve their golf performance. In fact, if you are serious about improving your golf game and you're not doing any physical conditioning off the golf course, you are in the minority and are probably reaching half of your potential.

Golfers of all levels are reaping the rewards of golf specific fitness. Weekend golfers, juniors, amateurs, men women, boys and girls. My oldest golf fitness client has been Sixty Eight, the youngest six! So as you can see, age is no barrier, nor is it an excuse not to be including regular exercise into your daily life. The benefit of also enhancing your golf performance is certainly a bonus.

Golf fitness is far from what most people think it is. Golf fitness usually does not involve lifting heavy. It does however involve intricate conditioning exercises and drill to enhance all the components of fitness which in turn improve golf performance. We are ultimately training not only the muscle, but also the central nervous system. Improve strength, power, mobility and flexibility throughout the joints required for efficient golf mechanics.

Efficiency is the key, and this is where the science begins. Conditioning is a science, so too is 'movement'. The golf swing is a very dynamic and complicated movement which takes considerable time to perfect, if ever. Strength and stability in some areas, mobility and flexibility in others, and movement across multiple planes ensure that golf is likened to other sports such as baseball and even Muay Thai. The ability to generate maximum power at impact, train the muscles to contract in the most efficient order to enhance consistency, effortlessness. Improving movement also ensure golfers remain injury free, and can create larger forces without placing added stress on joints such as the lower back, shoulders and wrists - all very common injuries with golfers.

So where do you start if you've never exercised before? If you really want to be a successful golfer, you must follow these 6 principles which are

6 Keys to Improved Golf Fitness Prowess

1. Increase dynamic flexibility.
While performing typical stretching exercises can improve static flexibility - that is, when the muscle remains a certain unchanged length. The golf swing requires a much more extreme range of motion and therefore requires dynamic flexibility beyond the static range. This means you need an individualized exercise program to increase dynamic flexibility in the joint that require a larger range of movement. Particularly the shoulder joint.

2. Build total body strength,
The body will only function at a level as strong as its weakest link. If one area of your body is weak, then your performance on the golf course will be limited. These weaknesses will result in poor swing mechanics and common swing faults. A weak left hip or glute muscle will lead to a 'slide', reducing the body's ability to create maximum power and club head speed at impact. Resulting in less distance and overcompensation to other weaker muscles and joints.

3. Develop core strength.
Most people think the core is your abs and lower back however your core actually covers all muscles from your chest, torso down to your knees. Your core is where you maintain stability and develop strength and power in your swing. A few abdominal crunches just won't strengthen your core. Core muscles must be strengthened while standing up, which is 'functional' and more specific to playing golf.

4. Maximise power.
Power equals speed times strength. your ability to demonstrate your strength faster. That means increasing club head speed which ultimately leads to longer drives. A faster club head speed means longer drives. Correct muscle sequence, on through difference planes of movement on a strong foundation and stance will help increase your ability to swing the club faster and develop maximum power. Your fitness program must therefore include strength, speed and power exercises.

5. Hit more quality balls at the range.
I understand that most golfers just enjoy hitting golf balls so they hit tray after tray of balls in every practice session. Focus on hitting quality practise shots, rest between shots to ensure adequate recovery and minimise fatigue. Fatigue leads to poor swing mechanics, swing faults and a higher risk of injury. Many golf injuries occur at the driving range more than the course. Something I tell all my golf fitness students is 'practice doesn't make perfect, Perfect practise makes perfect. Aim for quality of movement, set objectives for your session, warm up properly (dynamically) and make improve your golf.

6. Hire a qualified golf fitness professional.
A 'golf fitness' professional can identify your strengths and weakness which are affecting your golf game. They can then identify your specific needs and design an effective golf conditioning program which will save you the time, money and give you more bang for your buck with your golf game.

What should you expect from your golf-conditioning program?

1. You become more teachable.
Often, a teaching pro can give you advice or a swing fault correction to compensate for a physical limitation such as a lack of flexibility or poor core strength. This is also a great way to get injured. You will also be able to get into those positions that your teaching pro needs you to be in, you are more aware of your body and follow your pro's advice and instructions with quality and ease.

2. More consistency
Proper golf conditioning program will improve consistency by optimizing your flexibility, strength, and power to reproduce your ideal swing consistently. Remember we are conditioning your nervous system, your control centre so you can perform your optimal swing repeatedly, time and time again.

3. Longer Drives.
Increasing your strength and power increases your club head speed and stability. Simply put, the harder you hit the ball, the further it goes - simple physics. Some of my clients have increased their drives by 60 yards over 3 months, and an increase of 20 yards in as little as a week is quite the norm at our performance studio.

4. More energy
When I ask my clients how they feel after the 9th, or even how my professionals play on day 2 or 3, the answer is always the same. I played badly, ran out of gas, couldn't concentrate and couldn't maintain my form! Correct and effective golf conditioning programs will increase your energy levels, allowing you to play your eighteenth hole as well as your first.

Learn the Golf Swing on the Computer

Tomtom GPS Software - A Buying Guide

Most of us have heard about GPS systems, but don't know a lot about the various brands, like Garmin, Navman, or Tomtom GPS software. The latter provides GPS solutions for a wide number of applications, including navigation in your car, on a motorcycle, from your phone or PDA or at the office.

You simply need to purchase a GPS receiving device for the application you want to use GPS for, and install the appropriate software. For instance, if you wanted to use your Treo or other SmartPhone as a GPS system, you'd buy what's called a Mobile 5 unit. This unit connects with your phone via BlueTooth, and gives you access to maps, door to door navigation instructions that stay onscreen while you take calls, and a handy, intuitive interface.

Tomtom GPS software can either purchased separately from your GPS unit or bundled with a GPS receiver. A DVD containing this software is usually around a hundred and fifty US dollars. That's not a lot to spend if you want to ensure that you always know how to get where you need to be.

Many softwares lets users update maps on the go, and share their new information. This means that if you hit an unexpected spot of construction or other obstacle, you can tell other users about it. That way, the maps always stay up to date. Also, unlike many other computerized directions, Tomtom GPS software will work almost anywhere in the world that you can receive a signal.

GPS software can be purchased online, or from most major electronics stores. You can purchase it with a GPS device, or, if you already have a compatible one, buy the software separately. These GPS Units and software are a great way to always know where you're going, no matter where you are.

Hit Straight Drives

A lot of golfers really battle to hit straight drives and getting off to a good start is such a confidence booster. There is nothing better than a good drive at the start of a round of golf. You will have a great day if you can hit straight drives off every tee.

The secret to straight driving is technique and confidence. If you have ever hit a straight drive then you can do it again. It's in there somewhere and all you have to do is find it and repeat it time and time again.

Many a bad tee shot is the result of tension - especially on the first tee of an important round or when there is a crowd around. The result is the player gets tense and so the whole body, starting from the grip and going right through the arms, legs and torso, is overcome with tension. The result can be embarrassing and shake a player's confidence.

Remember when playing that the woods are a little bit longer than the irons and therefore a slightly flatter swing plane is required (don't adjust for this because of this article!). In many cases pulling out the driver is a habit and is sometimes not even required. If you have a 350 meter/yard hole you can probably easy take two six irons to get there. Why make it more difficult by playing a driver?

A very good way of grooving the swing and getting confidence to hit straight drives regularly is to practice with a shortened back swing. When you go to the range shorten your back swing to 75%. Make sure you accelerate evenly through the ball and make a full follow through.

As you do this more and more at practice your big muscles will groove themselves to perform the same when you go back to a full swing. Try it you'll be amazed at the results. You may even find that with a shortened back swing the loss in distance (if any) is so negligible that with the extra accuracy it is not worth worrying about.

Standing on the first tee knowing that you will be in play after your tee shot is a huge confidence booster. No-one ever worries about who plays the second shot first yet we all want to smack the longest drive. Funny thing the ego (intended for the men out there - ladies don't seem to worry about this too much).

Give it a try I guarantee you will hit straight drives more often than you do at the moment.

As a golf coach I really enjoy helping people improve their game. If you found this article interesting (and I hope you did) and if straight driving is one of the areas you would like to improve in take a look at my website for more information on how to hit straight drives and lower your scores? But please remember no amount of coaching will help if you aren't prepared to put in a little practice

Golf Ball Striking Tips - Improve Your Golf Swing Today (Part II)

When addressing the ball, most PGA tour players bend forward approximately 36 degrees. The average golfer will usually set up with either too much or too little forward bend causing them to lift the upper body at the top of the swing and at impact. This almost always results in inconsistent shotmaking and bloated golf scores. Here are a few golf ball striking tips to keep those scores down.

Proper Shoulder Tilt

Proper shoulder tilt plays a huge role in golf ball striking and the overall golf swing. It's major impact is on weight transfer during the swing. The average golfer will set up with level shoulders and no shoulder tilt. This will cause them to lean towards the target with their shoulders.

Most professional golfers will tilt their shoulders slight to the right when addressing the ball. This will help to position their body behind the ball at the right spot for an effective weight shift during the swing. Pay attention to your shoulder from the top of your swing, to ball impact. You want your spine to move farther to the right on your downswing. Ensuring your shoulders are tilted properly is one of the most important golf ball striking tips you can learn.

Increase Side Bend

When you are in the middle of your swing at your club is at the top, you want to try and increase your side bend. In order to increase your side bend, you want to tilt your upper torso slightly to the right by 10 degrees or more. It helps me to feel like I am moving the top of my spine away from the target than the bottom in the middle of your backswing.

As you start to bring your club down to strike the ball, you want to slowly move the top of your spine farther away from your target. Try and bend your spine about 20 degrees. This will position your right shoulder just under your left shoulder as you swing your club to strike the ball. This will help to ensure that your club is on the right path through your downswing, and helps to maximize clubhead speed. Practice the last two golf ball striking tips, and your golf game will really benefit.

Play Better Golf by Improving Your Swing

One summer, I was golfing with a group of guys I have never met before. One of them had the longest drive I have ever seen, it's just, he could not control it. These drives were going 300-350 yards, but some ended up on fairways of different holes, or in the woods, etc. I had no idea that a simple tip was going to drastically improve his swing, allowing him to play better golf.

What I told him was to loosen up his grip and keep his wrists straight. I know, nothing new to anyone who has shanked a shot here or there, but you will be surprised how many people know this, but do not do it. This guy took the suggestion, and was killing the balls.

Every time you go onto the course, I am sure you get bombarded but suggestions from your golfing buddies. But sometimes this advice can help you. Do not think they are scrutinizing you, they want to help you. If you want to play better golf, try taking some suggestions, you may be pleasantly surprised.

Improve your swing, play better golf, it's that simple! Do not be afraid to take the suggestions of golfers who seem to know their stuff. You never know, they may give you the tidbit you need to improve your swing, and essentially play better golf.

If you would like some more serious tips to drastically improve your golf game in as little as two weeks, check out my blog, The Simple Golf Swing.

GPS Update - Is Your Mapping Software Out of Date?

GPS updates and improvements are coming faster and faster these days. Portable and dashboard-mounted GPS navigators are now standard in many new cars and trucks, and the uses of GPS in daily life are expanding rapidly.

Drivers now expect much more from their car GPS unit than accurate street and highway maps. They want to know speed limits, driving times, and where traffic is likely to be backed up. They want to know the location of the nearest gas station, or post office, or restaurant.

GPS technology uses signals from military satellites to pinpoint a user's exact geographic location. But most of the time, knowing your exact latitude and longitude--in and of itself--is not particularly useful. The real value of GPS lies in the interface between the positional signal from space and the mapping software stored inside each receiver.

What does your Nuvi know?

GPS map updates contain an astonishing amount of information. Regular GPS users quickly become accustomed to having all this information at their fingertips, and often find it irritating when some detail is missing. But those driving with a GPS navigator for the first time often find it to be a remarkable experience. The device always "knows" where you are, what lies ahead, and how to get to where you are going--and it tells you.

It's easy to forget sometimes where all that "knowledge" comes from. Information on streets, services and points of interest all has to be collected manually, by people out driving the road network, conducting surveys and recording the data. In this regard GPS maps are no different than old paper street maps. They represent a snapshot in time, and as time passes they may become out of date.

The downtown street grid of a major city may change very little over the years. But traffic patterns and driving restrictions may change. Detours and one-way designations may be put in place. Freeway on-ramps and exits may be opened or closed. In more newly developed areas the road network itself does change and expand all the time.

But roads are just the beginning. In addition to actual maps, GPS navigators contain many layers of additional information. Business and service locations stored in your GPS can change virtually overnight. New surveys can always reveal new points of interest, either because something has changed or because the particular piece of data was never collected before.

If you think about it, you probably know many ways in which your town or region has changed in just the past few years. Your GPS should know about those changes too.

GPS Map Updates

Drivers who invest in expensive GPS navigators are now demanding better and more up-to-date maps and information, and manufacturers are trying to respond. Unfortunately, the release of new GPS updates for specific brands and models is sometimes erratic. You may buy a new unit with pre-installed mapping software, only to see new software released soon after. This together with the cost of the mapping updates is a common source of irritation for GPS users.

To understand why this occurs, it's helpful to know something about the process of GPS data collection. GPS makers like Garmin contract with mapping companies, such as Navteq, to provide their geographic information. The mapping companies continually survey and re-survey different areas, and update their databases accordingly.

Data gathering for new maps is a time-consuming and expensive process. And once the information is collected, it can take a while for GPS manufacturers to convert it into their own specific software formats and produce GPS updates (in the form of a download or DVD) for distribution.

However like everything else in the world of GPS, this extended process of data collection and product production is improving. Increasingly, mapping companies and GPS manufacturers are prioritizing areas for updating based on customer feedback.

GPS updates for Garmin, Magellan, TomTom and other popular brands are now coming yearly in most cases, and contain more new information. The latest major map update for Garmin Nuvi and Street Pilot users, called City Navigator North America 2009, was released in the spring of 2008. It contains improved map coverage of over 60 major metropolitan areas in the United States and Canada, and six million updated points of interest.

Other companies are experimenting with new strategies for keeping their GPS maps software and databases as current as possible. TomTom recently introduced MapShare technology in its GO 720 GPS receiver. Mapshare allows TomTom users to submit and share their own GPS updates immediately when route changes or mapping errors are noted. Other TomTom owners can then choose whether or not they want to download the customer-generated changes, or wait for official updates that are verified by the company.

In coming years it seems certain that number of GPS navigators on the road will continue to expand, and new approaches to geographic information sharing will be developed. As these processes unfold, the cost of GPS map updates will likely go down even as the quantity and quality of information continues to rise.

Golf Investment Engine (GIE) Review

Among the plethora of sports betting systems that are available today some do stand out from the crowd for their uniqueness and the golf investment engine is one such system having undoubtedly stood the test of time.

The golf investment engine is a powerful piece of software that is able to accurately calculate the true probability of one player beating another over a round of professional golf.

Its database contains an archive of the past performances of all players on the European and PGA tours on each golf course. It also contains the best odds offered by all bookmakers over the past five years, and the players' performances against those odds. Golf is a unique sport in that a player actually plays against the course rather than against his opponent.

Golf Investment Engine uses sophisticated algorithms to work out what the true probability (in other words the true odds) of any player beating any other player should be. It will then search for bookmakers offering sufficiently higher odds to generate a healthy profit margin. By only investing on instances where the odds are higher than they should be, you are mathematically guaranteed to make a profit over time. These instances are known as investment prices.

Golf betting is a worldwide multi-million pound industry with tournaments all year round and almost all bookmakers offer odds on all the major tournaments this gives the GIE plenty of opportunities to seek out investment prices.

The golf investment engine is so successful because you are only placing bets when the odds on a player to win a round of golf are higher than the statistical probability of winning. The GIE is mathematically certain over time to make a consistent profit.

Golf Investment Engine was relaunched in July 2006 with a brand new staking system in place and after feedback from customers now only uses four bookmakers for ease of use. In the first three months after being relaunched it delivered an incredible 46% return on investment. This amounts to growth of 4,625 GBP outperforming high interest savings account, the stock market and property. These results were independently verified so you can be sure that they are genuine.

If the prospect of earning huge amounts of winnings from a golf betting system is not enough to tempt you then Golf Investment Engine has also negotiated 100s of pounds worth of free bets with online bookmakers.

Free GPS Software

I took a look at some of the online offers for free GPS software and found, like many "free" offers there were often limits and provisos involved. Often the freeware is a scaled--down version of purchasable products. Sometimes the free product has restricted functionality with features disabled, other products are trial--based and are disabled after a certain time (hours or days or use).

An example of limited free GPS software can be found at GPS Utility. The downloadable freeware is limited 100 waypoints and 500 track points. (There are 65,000 of each in the registered version of their program.) The free program gives you a good opportunity to try before you buy, and this is the benefit of most free programs.

There are online sites that list various free GPS software and describe how to use the programs after you download them. Often individuals who have used the programs themselves develop the sites. These are great because they give you an unbiased interpretation of the benefits and disadvantages of the programs before you use them.

Using free GPS software you can download programs that allow you to retrieve and display aerial photos, topographical maps, USGS landmarks. There are programs available that allow you import scanned images and add latitude and longitude points and other data.

Free GPS software downloads are available for PDA units that are capable of communication with GPS receivers. With these downloads you can have a useful navigation assistant, location database manager, and GPS data converter.

Programs to manage GPS waypoint and route files are available for both PC and Mac users. The waypoints and route files can be saved or converted to various formats used by other mapping programs.

If you need to transfer information to and from your GPS receiver and your home computer or laptop there are several free programs that allow you to do so. There are also programs that allow Garmin GPS receivers to "talk" to one another.

Many of the programs listed here are directed at the hiking/trekker community, but there are also free programs available for auto GPS systems and marine navigational systems. I found a couple of marine navigation programs that allow you to download nautical charts and plotters.

There are free GPS software programs that allow you to download street maps that might not be included in your auto--navigation system. If you intend downloading in--vehicle software, make sure that it has audio capacity, an essential safety factor for motorists. One such program offers data for several countries with voice guidance in twelve languages.

Free GPS software is also available for downloading to your cell phone. This is mostly tracking software and can be phone specific. You might want to check with your carrier before downloading anything to your cell phone to make sure that it does not incur extra charges.

As satellites are constantly moving, it is helpful to know the optimal time for data collection in your area. There is free GPS software that includes an almanac to let you know the availability of satellites at any given time.

Some of the free GPS software is brand specific. Programs designed for a Garmin receiver may not work for a Magellan, so check out the specifications carefully, especially if you intend purchasing a registered version after your trial period. Other software works with most brands.

Be Careful When Buying Antique Or Vintage Golf Clubs

The sport of golf dates back centuries, and the early equipment used by those first players are very collectible. Originating in Scotland, the game of golf has changed little over the years, but the equipment definitely has changed! Although actually used by some golfers who simply desire the feel the experience of golf in its early days, most antique golf clubs and equipment is for show only. If you have a golf fanatic in your life, you can't go wrong with the gift of an antique club, it would be the perfect gift for any devoted golfer.

So how do you find the value of an older club or set of clubs? One source is the PGA Value Guide. However, the PGA Value Guide only can give you prices on more current, usable golf sets, and really can't be relied on for prices of antique and vintage golf gear.

Most used golf club models are sold by private individuals and online on eBay. Prices and quality can vary so it pays to be armed with knowledge of the market and the product. There have literally been thousands of golf clubs produced over many years, and it is specialized knowledge to know about all of them.

The best sources for acquiring and valuing antique clubs would be dealers that specialize in such rare equipment. You can find them online, or just look in the phone directory in the larger cities. Place a call to your local golf pro - more often than not he or she will know a collector in your area that can help you. This is probably the best way to go, because you are really going to have to trust the judgment of an expert, and a real collector that has spent his own money to acquire vintage clubs would be a reliable source.

When evaluating clubs, be careful. With woods, make sure you view the grain and lamination of the wood on the head. This can be a tip-off of the clubs age and construction. Know the club line you are interested in - many manufacturers changed their production methods over the years, and two sets of clubs made only one or two years apart may not be that close in terms of quality of construction.

If you are interested in the fine hobby of collecting antique golf clubs and equipment, arm yourself with knowledge and research before you buy. And remember, with vintage golf clubs, as with anything else, you most often get what you pay for!
